On Monday 10th December All of KS1 and UKS2 at Thirsk Community Primary School took part in a den making activity.
The morning session was used for KS1. They were set an open task of creating a den from the materials given. The children were divided into smaller groups and set about the challenge that lay ahead....

Thirsk's entirely volunteer-run Ritz Cinema is very excited to offer an opportunity to see yet another film before it gets its full release. On the evening of Sunday the 13th of January The Runaways will be screened.
Filmed in North Yorkshire and featuring well known stars the runaways of the title are three children and their donkeys. Due to family difficulties they have to flee their seaside home (Whitby, moody and evocative whether in light or dark) taking the animals with them heading west for Leyburn in search of their estranged mother. Aimed essentially at the teenage market comparisons have been drawn to the classic 'The Railway Children'....

Barry Dodd, Lord Lieutenant
At the end of May, North Yorkshire and Thirsk lost a dynamic friend in Barry Dodd, the Queen’s Lord Lieutenant for the County. Mr Dodd died when the helicopter he was piloting crashed near his home. He was a successful businessman who had for some years devoted a day a week of his time to public service. One example was his support for The Clock in Thirsk. Tributes to him were paid by business and community groups, local government and armed forces. His wife, Frances Dodd, described him as “intelligent and visionary” and a man who “lived his life according to his values of honesty and integrity.”....

A huge well done to the children of Topcliffe CofE Academy for their donations to Thirsk Clock. This year, as part of their learning about the Christian value of Compassion, the children participated in a 'Reverse Advent'....

Once again, Thirsk Royal British Legion showed how to put on two very enjoyable parties for the opposite ends of the age range this Christmas. Firstly, on Friday 14th December it was the Senior patrons turn to celebrate at a well-attended party in the Club on Kirkgate, Thirsk, hosted by Steward Mandy Stout and her stalwart team in a highly decorated lounge. The following afternoon, it was the children’s turn in a very packed room crammed with children, parents and relatives who came along to see the superbly excellent entertainment supplied by Concert Secretary John Phillips and his team of elves to keep them enthralled all afternoon....

The evening of 6th December, the students of Thirsk Sixth Form hosted a Christmas party for the elderly in our community. The night was filled with Christmas cheer and the scent of sherry.
The evening kicked off with our guests being welcomed by the smiling faces of our student hosts, and then they were presented with a glass or two of sherry as they were seated....

A new puzzle book has been created by Julian Morgan, of Duggleby, that is based on the memoirs and TV series written by the famous vet and author Alf Wight OBE (James Herriot).
Julian is best known for his books of Yorkshire-themed puzzles and sonnets, and he has now created a new book of 50 puzzles based on the memoirs of James Herriot....

Christmas cheer came early to the residents of East Thirsk as local organizations including East Thirsk Community Association, The Thirsk Rotary Club, and Home Instead Senior Care teamed up to provide the older residents of East Thirsk with a free complementary Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
Every year, East Thirsk Community Association organize a free Christmas event for their older residents, and the event is held at East Thirsk Community Hall, Hambleton Place. This year over 70 residents enjoyed a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings and Christmas pudding....

A scratch D team, assembled less than 2 days before, travelled to Leeds Adel on Sunday morning for a league meeting, facing teams from Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds, Driffield and Rotherham. Thirsk got off to a good start in the first game, defeating a well organized Rotherham side 1-0. Meeting Driffield in the second game, Thirsk won by the same scoreline, Coco being the goal scorer in both games. Next up was Doncaster, who had already shown themselves to be the team to beat, but Thirsk held firm against a lively Doncaster attacking line, and emerged with a well deserved 0-0 draw....

The North Yorkshire-based Biker Group has announced a £800,000 investment that will see the expansion of services at its newest depot and the creation of jobs.
Biker Group has invested in a new concrete batching plant and two concrete mixer trucks at its site at Dalton Industrial Estate, near Thirsk....

Girls from Queen Mary’s School, near Ripon, have received national and regional recognition in their Gymnastics and Trampolining seasons that came to a close this weekend.
The Queen Mary’s Under 10 Gymnastics team finished 3rd in the UK in the National Independent Schools Gymnastics competition. Amongst a strong field, Willow Briggs, Martha Pybus, Araminta Standeven and Zoe Hall each had to perform a floor routine and two vaults to secure the top three finish....

Many of the best providers of food and drink and hospitality in Hambleton and Richmond gathered for the annual Flavours of Herriot Country awards, held at the imposing Tennants auction rooms in Leyburn. Hosted by Radio York’s Elly Florentini, and sponsored by local councils and many local businesses including G H Smith printers, this event flies the flag for the best produce and service in the area and gives the folk who work hard for others’ leisure a chance to enjoy an event focussed instead on them. The judges of the various categories always look for friendly service and good food. Finalists included Upstairs Downstairs and White Rose Book Café, and it was White Rose who won the award for Tea Room of the Year....

Thirsk Market Traders decorated their stalls and donned their Christmas jumpers to enhance the Christmas spirits at last week’s festive market.
The regular Saturday market was joined by six extra stalls selling local crafts and alcoholic gifts whilst Thirsk Royal British Legion Band provided live music to help create the festive atmosphere....

Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, attended an event sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Parliament on Monday 26 November in support of constituents who suffer from the debilitating condition. Mr Hollinrake said “I have received a number of letters from constituents who suffer from this debilitating condition who have explained the devastating effect it has had on their lives and those of their family members, and so I can understand that living with progressive MS is often painful and exhausting....
